Question Tags: Simple Past (was/were) – Mahalede ve Şehirde Hayat

Konu Özeti

Question tag (soru eki), cümlenin sonuna eklenen kısa bir sorudur. Söylediğimiz bilgiyi doğrulatmak ya da karşımızdakinden onay almak için kullanılır. Türkçedeki '…değil mi?' ifadesine benzer. Bu konuda 'to be' fiilinin geçmiş zamanı (was/were) ile kurulan soru eklerini öğreneceksin. Konu, 5. Ünite 'Life in the Neighbourhood and the City' bağlamında işlenir.

Temel Kavramlar

• Olumlu cümle → olumsuz tag: was/were + not (wasn't / weren't) + özne zamiri
• Olumsuz cümle → olumlu tag: was/were + özne zamiri
• Tag'deki özne her zaman zamirdir: I, you, he, she, it, we, they.
• Tag'deki fiil, cümledeki fiille aynıdır (was ise was, were ise were).
• Tag kısaltılmış yazılır: wasn't, weren't.

Olumlu cümle, wasn't/weren't + zamir? | Olumsuz cümle, was/were + zamir?

Dikkat: Özne 'The shops' gibi çoğul bir isim ise tag'de 'they' kullanılır: The shops were open, weren't they? Özne 'The bakery' gibi tekil bir isim ise 'it' kullanılır: The bakery was closed, wasn't it?

Zamir Seçimi ve Özel Durumlar

• Tekil isim (the bridge, the museum, my street) → it
• Çoğul isim (the buses, the buildings) → they
• Kadın (my mother, Ayşe) → she; erkek (my uncle, Ali) → he
• Kişi grupları: (Ali and I) → we; (Ali and Ece) → they
• There was/were ile: There was a cinema here, wasn't there? / There were many cars, weren't there?
• I was ile olumlu cümlede tag 'wasn't I?' olur.

Ses Tonu

Tag'i söylerken ses tonu anlamı değiştirir. Cevabı bildiğinde ve sadece onay istediğinde ses tonu aşağı iner (↘). Gerçekten emin değilsen ve bilgi almak istiyorsan ses tonu yukarı çıkar (↗). Örnek: 'The museum was near the station, wasn't it?' cümlesini emin olarak söylersen tonu düşürürsün.

Kısa Cevap Verme

Sık yapılan hata: Olumsuz cümlede 'Yes' ve 'No' karıştırılır. Cevap gerçeğe göre verilir: Gerçekten oradaysan 'Yes, I was.', orada değilsen 'No, I wasn't.' dersin. Türkçedeki 'evet, değildim' mantığına kapılma.
